The Norwegian Film & Cinema has given "Sound of the Sami plains"
S-Film status, that stands for "Extraordinary Quality Film".

10 artists compete in the yoik section and 6 artists compete in the song section. Both winners will receive 15.000 krone, and in addition, the winner of the song section gets to compete in Liet International - an annual music competition for European minority languages - this year organized in Lorient in France.

HANS OLE EIRA

We meet Hans Ole Eira, a reindeer Sami from Masé, a few miles from Kautokeino in Norway. Hans Ole is both exited and nervous because he will joik on a stage for the very first time. We follow him on the plains, together with his friends, where he prepare himself mentally for the big event that will take place in Bakteharji Sports arena in Kautokeino, Norway. Hans Ole will joik his godson Nils Jøran, which will be a very emotional experience for him.

PIA MARIA HOLMGREN

Pia Maria is a singer and songwriter from Luleå in Sweden. She is an experienced artist, but has never won the biggest and most prestigious cultural event in Sápmi: 'Sami Grand Prix'.
She hope to win this year with her own song.

IVAN ANDRE´ SKUM

Ivan André Skum is normally on of three guys in the renowned Sami rap group Duolva Duottar, but for Sami Grand Prix he's on his own, going solo with his own rap song about love.



SVEN HENRIKSEN

Sven Henriksen is a singer, actor and writer from Mallangen
in Troms, north in Norway. While filming "Sound of the Sami
plains" he lived in Oslo, the capital of Norway. Oslo is the area in
Norway with the largest population of Sami people.
Henriksen is a renowned artist in Sápmi, not only for being
an excellent performer, but also for being openly gay and
fighting for the acceptance of gay people in the Sami community.

SYNOPSIS:

                   The documentary film “SOUND OF THE SAMI PLAINS” (58 min) was filmed in Kautokeino - in the very north of Norway - at the 20th anniversary of 'Sami Grand Prix'. This prestigious yoik- and song competition is held annually at Easter and is considered to be the most important and biggest cultural event for new Sami- yoik and song. “Sound of the Sami Plains” is the very first documentary that is made about Sami Grand Prix.
                   Sápmi, contains of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Artists from all 4 Sami nations is competing for the big win and Callabee Film AS is following some of them during rehearsals and preparations these last few hectic days before this big event takes place in Báktehárji sports arena in Kautokeino, Norway.
                   Many renowned Sami artists have either had their brave debut or gotten their big brake at this colorful event.
                   While the history of the Sami peoples has often been of struggle and hardship, this is a feel good movie that will bring out big smiles and laughter with any audience.
